School-Based Apprenticeships or Traineeships
Information for Parents and Students
A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship provides students in years 10 to 13 with the opportunity to combine their South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) with Vocational Education and Training (VET) and paid employment. These programs are designed to support students in developing practical skills and gaining industry experience while completing their secondary education.
In most cases, these opportunities are aligned with a Flexible Industry Pathway (FIP), an industry-endorsed route that supports students in transitioning from school to employment.
Program Structure
School-based apprenticeships or traineeships are delivered in two phases:
- Phase One (years 10 to 11):
Students typically participate in their apprenticeship or traineeship for one to three days per week, allowing them to continue with their compulsory SACE subjects. - Phase Two (year 12):
Students may increase their participation to up to five days per week, with flexible arrangements in place to ensure they can still meet their SACE requirements.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, students must:
- Be enrolled in year 10, 11, 12, or 13
- Be undertaking the SACE or an equivalent secondary school qualification
This pathway offers a valuable opportunity for students to gain real-world experience, develop employability skills, and work towards a nationally recognised qualification, all while completing their secondary education.
