Harold Mitchell Inclusive Education Centre
The Harold Mitchell Inclusive Education Centre (HMIEC) provides high-quality education for students in years 7 to 12 who have a verified intellectual disability and/or other additional needs.
Placement Process
Student eligibility is determined through a panel process managed by the Department for Education’s psychologists. These professionals assess both eligibility and suitability when recommending placement in an alternative learning environment, rather than a mainstream class.
Learning Options
HMIEC offers a range of tailored learning environments, including:
- Disability Unit classes
- Special classes within our Special Options Unit
These programs are designed to support each student's individual learning needs in a safe, inclusive, and engaging setting.
Our Philosophy
We believe every student deserves the opportunity to thrive. We are committed to supporting students in developing their independence, life skills, and confidence, empowering them to explore meaningful post-school pathways and become active, successful participants in their communities.
Community Engagement
We value strong connections with the local and broader community. Our students regularly participate in a variety of enriching experiences that support their personal development and social inclusion.
These opportunities include:
- Events organised by Ladies of Variety
- Work experience placements with local community centres and businesses
- Excursions and community-based learning activities that promote independence and real-world skills
These experiences help students build confidence, develop practical skills, and foster meaningful relationships within their community.
