Content

At Year 10, students have a choice between 'standard' Health and Physical Education and 'Recreational' Health and Physical Education. This subject differs from REC HPE in that it focuses more on skill and knowledge development in traditional team sports and less on recreational physical activities.

Recreational Health and Physical Education is a subject where students learn to critically analyse and apply health and physical activity information to devise and implement personalised plans for maintaining healthy and active habits. This course includes a range of sports and activities with a focus on positive participation, development of knowledge and skill, and collaboration with peers. Students investigate alternatives to conventional sports and consider how these are important to cultural identity and their importance to individual and community health.

The health component of the course also includes the SHINE program. Participation aims to improve student ability to develop healthy relationships, confidence and happiness within themselves and their bodies and make safe, well-informed decisions in the future.

Topics may include respect, sexuality, diversity, relationships, gender/power/stereotypes, safer sex, negotiation and consent.

Assessment

Tasks may include:

  • SHINE: Journal
  • Recreational Physical Activity: Peer, Self and Teacher Assessed
  • Investigation: Healthy People, Healthy Communities
  • Investigation: Eat Well, Live Well
  • Investigation: Personal Health Plan
  • Practical Assessments may include Badminton, Bocce, Croquet, Lawn Bowls, Squash, Table Tennis, Ten-pin Bowling, Tennis, Frisbee Golf and Yoga

Additional Information

Practical participation is an essential element of the curriculum. Students who cannot take part on medical/health grounds require notes from parents/carers.

Excursions that enhance learning opportunities will be an additional cost to individual students, should they occur, at a cost of $40 (or less, depending on the excursion)
