Content

Students will be introduced to Australian agriculture industries such as poultry, sheep, dairy, pork and biosecurity.  

Topics may include:

  • Introduction: Farm navigation; General safety; Biosecurity at the school farm and community
  • Poultry: Common terminology; Breeds; Chicken anatomy; Eggs - laying process of a hen; Factors affecting egg yolks; Types of poultry production systems; Structure of an egg; Egg handling
  • Sheep: Common terminology; Sheep anatomy and physiology; Sheep behaviour; Sheep husbandry and management; Sheep weighing practical
  • Dairy Industry: Safety around calves; Daily care on calves; Feeding of calves; Operation of a dairy farm; Careers within the dairy industry; Dairy products and nutrition
  • Pigs: Common terminology; Pig breeds; Pig production system (types of housing); Careers in the pig industry; Pig handling; Animal enrichment  

Assessment 

Term 1 and 2 tasks may include:      

  • Chicken Welfare essay         
  • Meat chicken weighing numeracy task        
  • Free-range vs. caged eggs tasting practical         
  • Cows Create Careers Dairy Competition         
  • Animal Enrichment design task  

Term 3 and 4 tasks may include:     

  • Chicken Welfare essay        
  • Meat chicken weighing numeracy task        
  • Free-range vs. caged eggs tasting practical        
  • Pig Housing design task        
  • Pig Behaviour ICT task
