The twentieth century became a critical period in Australia’s social, cultural, economic and political development. Students study the history of the modern world and Australia from 1918 to the present, with an emphasis on Australia in its global context.  

Topics may include:

• World War II (1939-1945): Students investigate wartime experiences through an in-depth study of World War II which includes a study of the causes, events, outcome and broader impact of the conflict as an episode in world history, and the nature of Australia’s involvement
• Rights and Freedoms (1945-Present): Students investigate struggles for human rights which include how rights and freedoms have been ignored, demanded or achieved in Australia and in the broader world context

Assessment 

Tasks may include:

• ‘Command Decisions’ WWII Battle Plan: In groups, using what they know about the weather, terrain, people involved, students create a battle plan which can be presented in a 3D format or as a documentary-style video
• Source Analysis: The use of atomic bombs to end World War II - students will be given several different sources
• Discussion: How effective have activists been in achieving change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?
• Examination: 70 minutes
