Content

Music Advanced is designed to extend students' existing musical understanding and skills in creating and responding to music. This builds on the skills and strengths acquired in the subject 'Music Experience' during semester 1.

Students learn to sing or play an instrument by taking weekly lessons with an instrumental or vocal teacher. They also learn to read and write music using conventional notation. They apply these skills in solo and ensemble contexts in class and by participating in whole-school vocal and instrumental groups.

Assessment

Creative work  60%

  • Performance: Students develop, refine, and present two performances in an ensemble and/or as a soloist. Students may perform using instruments (including technology) and/or voice. Performances are 3-5 minutes each.
  • Arrangement or composition: Students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of composition and arranging techniques by harmonising and arranging a given or original melody for a selection of 3 or more instruments, 4 minutes in length.
Musical literacy  40%
  • Reflections on creative work: Arrangement or composition and performance evaluations.
Students present reflections on what they learned in their creative work, with reference to musical elements and compositional and arrangement techniques used.  500 words or 5-minute oral/multimodal.
  • Musical literacy folio:  Students complete a range of theory aural and analysis exercises to form their folio.
